Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah is the state’s largest insurer. Their products and plans include Individual, Group, Medicare Supplement and Life & Disability. The company’s operating expense ratio – 9.3 percent – is one of the lowest in the nation among health insurers.
History
The company was founded in 1942 as Utah’s first health insurance carrier when six hospitals formed the Intermountain Hospital Plan (IHP). Two years later, a physicians’ group began an active sales campaign with IHP to offer both physician and hospital benefits. Within two years there were 100,000 enrollees. By 1966, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah was the administrator for Medicare Parts A and B. In 1982, It later developed HealthWise, one of Utah’s first HMOs. In 1984, the ValueCare PPO network was created. The company experienced rapid enrollment growth in the 1990s. In 2002, the company launched BlueChoicesSM, a new suite of products unlike any option ever introduced in the Utah market. BlueChoices is a consumer-directed suite of products that has proven to be the most successful and fastest growing offering ever for the company.
